Asus Launches VivoTab Smart 10.1

Asus Launches VivoTab Smart 10.1

Welcome to a laptop battery specialist of the Asus Laptop Battery

ASUS today launched the VivoTab Smart tablet with 10.1-inch HD display and full Windows 8. The VivoTab Smart features an Intel Atom dual-core processor and an optional TranSleeve Keyboard that magnetically combines screen protection with a wireless keyboard for enhanced productivity. Here's more info on this upcoming Asus Windows 8 tablet:

Just 9.7mm thin and 580g light, ASUS VivoTab Smart has a 10.1-inch LED-backlit display with a crisp 1366 x 768 HD resolution. IPS display technology delivers 178-degree wide viewing angles and ensures clear and bright images, even when seen from the side. VivoTab Smart also features 5-point multi-touch for fluid fingertip control with Windows 8. The TranSleeve Keyboard is an innovative accessory that is a cover, keyboard, and stand all rolled into one. It not only aids in the typing experience, but protects the tablet as well.

With its Intel Atom Z2760 dual-core processor, VivoTab Smart delivers fast and responsive performance, while still providing up to 9.5 hours battery like Asus A32-1015 Battery, Asus Eee PC 1015 Battery, Asus Eee PC VX6 Battery, Asus Eee PC 1215 Battery, Asus AL31-1005 Battery, Asus Eee PC 1005 Battery, Asus Eee PC 1001HA Battery, Asus A32-F5 Battery, Asus X59 Battery, Asus AP32-1008P Battery, Asus AP31-1008P Battery, Asus Eee PC 1008P Battery life on a single charge. VivoTab Smart gives complete peace of mind to users too, thanks to complete compatibility with both Windows 8 Store and Desktop apps, along with plug and play support for a wide range of existing peripherals.

ASUS VivoTab Smart features high-quality cameras front and rear. The 8-megapixel rear camera with auto-focus, five-element lens and 1080p Full HD video recording captures precious moments with crystal clarity, while the front 2-megapixel camera is perfect for face-to-face video chat. VivoTab Smart also features renowned ASUS SonicMaster audio technology for incredible sound quality with all kinds of listening material from its built-in stereo speakers.

The keyboard is probably the biggest issue that many people will have with the VIZIO Thin + Light design. Rather than an isolated layout that many companies are using, it uses a more traditional layout where the keys are right next to one another with a flat surface. This makes touch typing more difficult as your will end up pressing more than one key or just missing from time to time. The keyboard also lacks any backlighting which is more common of the premium ultrabooks. The trackpad uses a single surface which seems a bit short. It works just fine for single touch instances but the cramped space makes multitouch gestures with Windows 8 more difficult to do.

VIZIO does not publish what the capacity of the internal battery is within the Thin + Light model and instead just says that it can last up to seven hours. In digital video playback testing, it listed roughly five hours before going into standby mode. This is well below what the company projects and is on the lower end for ultrabooks that are equipped with solid state drives. In fact, the Dell XPS 14 ultrabook manages to run for six and a half hours and the Apple MacBook Pro 15 with Retina can achieve up to seven.

With its $950 price tag, there are a number of more premium oriented ultrabooks that can be directly compared to the Thin + Light. The closest in terms of pricing and features would be the Cyberpower Gamer Zues M3, Dell XPS 14 and Fujitsu LifeBook U772. All three of these are ultrabooks with the same processor but have some variation in features. The Cyberpower offers lots of RAM and a larger solid state drive with more peripheral ports but has display issues. The Dell is much heavier and larger, uses a hybrid drive setup for more storage space and has better running times all with the same equivalent resolution display. The Fujitsu offers a similar level of slimness and is actually a bit lighter but has a higher price tag and a display that is clearly not as nice.

Acer pullouts herald end of netbook

Acer pullouts herald end of netbook

Welcome to a laptop battery specialist of the Asus Laptop Battery

Just over five years after their inception, netbooks may be about to disappear from the market—for good.

DigiTimes reports that Asus and Acer are the only remaining players in the netbook game, where the bulk of sales originate from "emerging markets." Acer has reportedly stopped announcing new netbook models already, and Asus is expected to halt Eee PC production at the end of the year. In short, "the netbook market will officially end after the two vendors finish digesting their remaining inventories."

Good riddance, I say—assuming DigiTimes has its facts straight. Netbooks may have been uniquely cheap, but their tiny screens, cramped controls, and sluggish hardware made them punishing to use. Tablets, especially convertible models, are a lot more compelling.

The disappearance of netbooks might deal a blow to Intel's Atom processor family. Intel is now making a push into Windows 8 tablets with lower-power Atom silicon, however, and early benchmarks show Atom-powered slates are fairly competitive with their ARM-driven foes, at least in terms of CPU power and battery such as Asus A42-A3 Battery, Asus A2000 Battery, Asus A42-A2 Battery, Asus A3000 Battery, Asus A6000 Battery, Asus A42-A4 Battery, Asus A4000 Battery, Asus L5800 Battery, Asus A42-L5 Battery, Asus L5000 Battery, Asus A32-UL20 Battery, Asus Eee PC 1201PN Battery life. Also, DigiTimes suggests Intel will keep offering higher-wattage Atom chips for embedded systems.

Problem was the original vision kept getting compromised until you ended up with small screen notebook again.

Netbooks were suppose to be small, inexpensive, had limited local storage, wireless and great battery life that provided you with internet access on the go. But first the screen was scaled up and then the keyboard and then it got a hard drive and then it had to run a full size copy of Windows so it needed more memory. During all this the battery life plummeted. Eventually what was the netbook, converged with the small FF notebook in size and price.

So now tablets have taken the netbooks roll as an internet portal. But even now the "need" to add a keyboard is starting to creep into tablet specs. Asus transformer tablets with keyboard ARE the new netbooks, just with a touch screen.

If no-one else will shed a tear for them, I will. A small form-factor, light-weight system under $400 with the availability for a full suite of well-known, well-established productivity software (aka Windows or Linux) is a valuable addition to the market IMHO. To paraphrase Cyril, the benefits of full-functionality, high portability can't be overstated, especially when the system can be readily connected to a full-sized monitor, keyboard and mouse back at your desk.

My little HP mini10 has given me great service for years (even with it's pathetically weak 1st-gen Atom CPU), and I expect to get good usage from it for another few years. If someone were to make a modern version - a current Atom or an AMD APU, 4Gs of RAM, a 10" 1366x768 screen, full Windows 7, about 2.5 lbs with a battery life of at least 6 hours, and a price tag around $350, I'd buy one. It's sad that I won't be given that choice.

Advertising And Women, E-Cigarette For Women, E-Cigarettes, Electronic Cigarette For Women, Electronic Cigarettes, Lady e-Cigarettes, Marketing To Women, Products For Women, Vaping Vamps, Vaping Vamps e-Cigarettes, Vaping Vamps For Women, Women News Today in "absurd products arbitrarily marketed to women," we bring you ... the ladies-only electronic cigarette. For those of you who have been puffing away on e-cigs (battery-operated devices that vaporize a tobacco-flavored mixture to simulate smoking) designed for macho manly men, your smoking-like habit has finally with battery such as Acer CGR-B/6G8AW battery, Acer CGR-B/350AW battery, Acer Ferrari 1005 battery, Acer Extensa 5620G battery, Acer TravelMate 7720 battery, Acer BTP-BCA1 battery, Acer Aspire 5670 battery, Acer TravelMate 7510 battery, Acer Aspire 9420 battery, Acer Aspire One D210 battery, Acer Aspire One ZG5 battery, Acer Aspire One 571 battery been delivered from testosterone h*ll by Vaping Vamps. (We know that these electronic cigarettes are for ladies because of the purple designs adorning them.)

According to the company's website, entrepreneur Maria Verven founded Vaping Vamps after she quit drinking in 2011 and was helping her daughter quit smoking. The e-cigarettes are supposedly "designed specifically to help women quit smoking." And if the product's mission statement is to be believed, the e-cigarettes are targeted toward a very specific type of woman.

Jezebel's Anna Breslaw argues that the Vaping Vamps are problematic -- not because they're targeted to women, but because they don't offer anything new to consumers besides a "girly" package. She writes:

aside from the packaging, it doesn't look like the actual e-cigarette is tailored to suit the specific needs of women at all, who have a different quit process than men do and could undoubtedly benefit from a little innovation to make the device suit their needs specifically, rather than just include a number of "kissable" fruit flavors to vape with and such.

E-cigarettes are just the latest in a long line of products targeted to women, usually via pink or purple trim rather than features designed to fill any specifically female need. In the last five months alone, Fujitsu unveiled its "Floral Kiss" computer, Bic for Her pens caused a stir on Amazon and Honda announced its (bubblegum-colored) lady car, called "She's."

Nvidia GeForce GT640M

Nvidia GeForce GT640M

Welcome to a laptop battery specialist of the Acer Laptop Battery

With this kind of a spec sheet, the performance part of the Sony Vaio SVS15115FNB was never a doubt. The Core i5 offers scores that are pretty much in the range of laptops with the same processor. The PC Mark 07 score of 2589 is pipped only by the HP Envy m6 that scored 2689 – when we speak of laptops with the same processor.

With a very powerful Nvidia GeForce GT640M graphics on board, you would be correct to assume that this would score fairly well in the graphics benchmark tests. However, surprisingly, that was not the case. The 3D Mark 06 score of 8577 is considerably lower than the Lenovo IdeaPad Z580 (9335 – Nvidia GeForce GT630M), Dell Inspiron 14R SE (12635 – Nvidia GeForce GT640M) and the Toshiba Satellite L850 (10498 – AMD Radeon HD7670M). Just to be sure, we double and triple checked the power settings, the graphics configuration and ensured that the very latest official drivers were installed, but the results remained the same. However, this is not to take away from the fact that the Sony Vaio S can do a decent amount of gaming. But if that is what you really want, then the Lenovo or the Toshiba machines probably make more sense.

However, we are a tad surprised that Sony did not even attempt to play with Lenovo on the spec sheet. The fact of the matter is rather simple – the specs matter more on the shop floor. In the same price bracket, the Lenovo comes with a Core i7 processor and 8GB of RAM, and the Vaio S feels rather underprepared in the face of that.

Battery like Acer UM09F36 battery, Acer UM09F70 battery, Acer Aspire 1825 battery, Acer UM09E78 battery, Acer UM09E36 battery, Acer Aspire One 752 battery, Acer BATBL50L6 battery, Acer Aspire 5100 battery, Acer GARDA53 battery, Acer Ferrari 1100 battery, Acer Ferrari 1000 battery, Acer TravelMate 3000 battery life, however, really brings the Vaio S back into reckoning. The tested battery life was 300 minutes, which is the maximum we have clocked on any laptop this year. Till now, the HP Pavilion G6 had the best score – 280 minutes. This showing takes the Vaio S pretty close to the ultrabook territory, and with a form factor like this, this is pretty much a win-win situation for most potential buyers.

The Sony Vaio S-series is a very interesting laptop. For what you pay to get one for yourself, you get a fair mix of performance, very slim profile certain gaming capabilities, excellent battery life and an IPS panel that pretty much takes the cake from all the rivals. If you are still weighing your decision on the specification sheet, then the Lenovo IdeaPad Z580 makes a lot more sense. Otherwise, you should consider the Vaio S, for the best display quality and a full HD resolution.

Processor: Intel Core i53210M @ 2.5GHz RAM: 4GB Storage: 640GB Display: 15.5-inch IPS LED (1920 x 1080 pixels) Graphics: Nvidia GeForce GT640M (2GB) Connectivity: 3 USB, HDMI, optical drive, memory card reader, Ethernet OS: Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) Listed under tags.

The Vaio S-series

The Vaio S-series

Welcome to a laptop battery specialist of the Acer Laptop Battery

Impressive, very! The Vaio S-series really is one of the few laptops that are worth this much money. For starters, there is no shortage of power. The battery life is by far the best among all laptops we tested in 2012, and almost closes in on ultrabook territory. But really why you should buy this laptop is because of the 15.5-inch Full HD IPS display, something that is a rather unique proposition. All in all, this one is rather powerful, with a brilliant display and yet remains surprisingly slim.

ReviewSpecifications & PerformanceThere are the laptops that stick to one category or the other. You have the ultra-portables. And then you have the desktop replacements that also double up as machines that let you game a bit. But, the best ones are those than can do almost all this, in tandem. The Sony Vaio SVS15115FNB is one such machine. And we are impressed. For the sake of a proper comparison to help with your buying decision with battery such as Acer Aspire 8920 battery, Acer Extensa 7630 battery, Acer Aspire 6920 battery, Acer AS07B72 battery, Acer AS07B32 battery, Acer Aspire 5920 battery, Acer AS10D51 battery, Acer AS10D73 battery, Acer AS10D75 battery, Acer AS10D61 battery, Acer Aspire 4738 battery, Acer Aspire 5551 battery, you will see multiple references in this review to the Lenovo IdeaPad Z580.

This is the part that is both good and bad about the Sony Vaio S. First up, all the good stuff. From the moment you fish it out of the box, the matte black finish looks God sent. It does not catch scratches or fingerprints like glossy surfaces do. Alternatively, the one colour throughout look does make it looks rather understated and sophisticated. The lid had a textured matte black finish, and you can feel the slightly coarse finish if you slide your palm on the surface. Open it up, and the same colour now gets a plain finish on the keyboard deck. There is no rough feel here, which makes a lot of sense. The bezel gets a third finish tone for the same colour! Without changing much, Sony has played around well to keep the laptop design and looks interesting.

Speaking of which, the very slim form factor of the Sony Vaio S-series is a huge surprise. Particularly when you consider the specifications sheet, and look at rivals who have a much thicker build. All the connectivity options are on the right side, with the slot load optical drive on the left.

Now for the bad parts! The Sony Vaio SVS15115FNB’s lid does seem rather thin and if you put some weight on it, or it has an accidental brush against a hard object, then it looks like it is prone to breaking. Sony has done its best by reinforcing the lid with carbon fiber, because the idea always was to keep it as thin as possible. However, there is no harm in being safe and not subjecting the lid to any sudden impacts.

Overall, the plastic used is fairly high quality, and the carbon fiber reinforcements ensure that the Vaio S doesn’t disappoint, at least in terms of rigidity. However, there seems to be that missing element that would have made the Vaio S look premium. Not to say that it looks ugly or overpriced at the moment, but doesn’t have the unique punch to make it stand out in a crowd. But, then again, it does get the work done, in a fairly stylish way.

Vehicle manufacturers

Welcome to a laptop battery specialist of the Acer Laptop Battery

This comprehensive report has detailed assessments and forecasts for all the sectors using and likely to use traction batteries. There are chapters on heavy industrial, light industrial/commercial, mobility for the disabled, two wheel and allied, pure electric cars, hybrid cars, golf cars, military, marine and other. The profusion of pictures, diagrams and tables pulls the subject together to give an independent view of the future ten years. Unit sales, unit prices and total market value are forecast for each sector for 2012-2022. The replacement market is quantified and ten year technology trends by sector are in there too, with a view on winning and losing technologies and companies.

This is the essential reference book for those who are anywhere in the hybrid and pure electric vehicle value chain. Those making materials, cells, battery like Acer UM09A71 battery, Acer UM09A75 battery, Acer Aspire One 751 battery, Acer Aspire One 531 battery, Acer AS07A72 battery, Acer AS07A31 battery, Acer Aspire 2930 battery, Acer Aspire 4920 battery, Acer UM09H56 battery, Acer UM09H75 battery, Acer UM09H36 battery, Acer Aspire One 532G battery sets or vehicles, researchers, legislators and market analysts will find it invaluable.

The whole pictureWith vehicle traction batteries it is important to look at the whole picture and this report does it for the first time. The rapidly growing market for traction batteries will exceed $55 billion in only ten years. However that spans battery sets up to $500,000 each with great sophistication needed for military, marine and solar aircraft use. Huge numbers of low cost batteries are being used for e-bikes but even here several new technologies are appearing. The largest replacement market is for e-bikes today and the value market for replacement batteries will not be dominated by cars when these batteries last the life of the car - something likely to happen within ten years. The trends are therefore complex and that is why IDTechEx has analysed them with great care.

Vehicle manufacturers are often employing new battery technology first in their forklifts or e-bikes, not cars, yet there is huge progress with car batteries as well - indeed oversupply is probable in this sector at some stage. The mix is changing too. The second largest volume of electric vehicles made in 2010 was mobility aids for the disabled but in ten years time it will be hybrid cars. The market for car traction batteries will be larger than the others but there will only be room for six or so winners in car batteries and other suppliers and users will need to dominate their own niches to achieve enduring growth and profits. Strategy must be decided now.

In this report, researched in 2010 and 2012 and frequently updated, we analyse the successes, the needs, the statistics and the market potential for traction batteries for all the major applications. This has never been done before. It is important to look at the whole picture because traction battery manufacturers typically sell horizontally across many applications and electric vehicle manufacturers increasingly make versions for many applications - heavy industrial, on road, leisure and so on. Indeed, the smarter putative suppliers will choose the sectors that best leverage their strengths rather than join the herd and be obliterated by corporations of up to $100 billion in size enjoying prodigious government support.

Welcome to a laptop battery specialist of the Acer Laptop Battery

Microsoft's radically different Windows 8 software is meant to work equally well in the mouse- and keyboard-driven world of desktop PCs and laptops and in the multitouch universe of tablets. And that challenges computer makers to come up with hardware designs that are equally flexible.

I've been testing two innovative, if imperfect, new Windows 8 ultrabook computers that meet the design challenge, within limits. There's the IdeaPad Yoga 13 from Lenovo and the Satellite U925t ultrabook convertible from Toshiba.

Lenovo's Yoga is so named because the touch-screen computer can be folded and flipped 360 with battery such as Acer AS09B58 battery, Acer AL10A31 battery, Acer AL10B31 battery, Acer Aspire One D260 battery, Acer Aspire 1830 battery, Acer Aspire One 753 battery, Acer AL10D56 battery, Acer Extensa 2400 battery, Acer BATEFL50L6C48 battery, Acer AS09D56 battery, Acer AS09D36 battery, Acer AS09D31 battery degrees into four distinct positions, starting in a standard clam-shell mode as a rather handsome laptop. You can also bend the display so that it faces you, with the rest of the computer serving as an out-of-the-way stand.

A third "tent mode" lets you prop up the computer like a tepee, which Lenovo says is ideal for browsing pictures or recipes.

The last mode turns Yoga into a full-fledged tablet. In some respects, this is its most disappointing posture, because the underbelly of the machine exposes the physical keyboard, and though the computer disables the keys, it feels unnatural.

The keyboard isn't exposed when you're using Toshiba's Satellite U925t as a tablet, but it's also a bit unwieldy. It's not immediately obvious how to transform the machine from a tablet to a laptop and back.

Both machines are at their best as conventional laptops. They have very usable physical keyboards and track-pads. At the same time the gesture-friendly Windows 8 interface all but begs you to tap, swipe, pinch and otherwise touch the screen.

The machines run the full version of Windows 8, the flavor that's compatible with your old Windows software, much of which was produced for the mouse and keyboard age.

After spending time with these computers, I don't think either the Lenovo Yoga or the Toshiba Satellite represent true iPad substitutes, so much as flexible replacements for notebooks and laptops. (I suspect the companies agree.)

Both weigh about 3.3 pounds, by no means heavy for a laptop. And they're relatively thin compared with many notebooks. But they are more than double the weight of the iPad and are a good deal thicker. Then again, the iPad doesn't function as a laptop like these ultrabooks, and it doesn't have a physical keyboard.

My Lenovo test configuration, sold at Best Buy for $999.99, has a third-generation Intel Core processor, 4 gigabytes of memory and a modest 128 GB solid-state drive, which actually provides just over 50 GB of available space for the stuff you want to store, because system files hog so much room.

Yoga has a single USB 3.0 port, a single USB 2.0 port, plus HDMI for hooking it up to a large high-definition TV. There's also a memory card reader on board and Dolby Home Theater sound.

acer Envy x2 Review

acer Envy x2 Review
Welcome to a laptop battery specialist of the Acer Laptop Battery
ReviewSpecifications. With the launch of Windows 8 this fall came a new generation of hybrid devices that can serve as laptops and then change into tablets or vice versa. An 11.6-inch Windows 8 notebook with a lid that pops off to become a standalone slate, the HP Envy x2 promises the best of both worlds, but does this $849 system justify a price that's $350 higher than the average notebook or tablet costs by itself?
Click to EnlargeMade from attractive brushed aluminum, the Envy x2 has a simple metallic aesthetic that makes it look like an expensive appliance. The tablet has a sleek silver-colored back that's tastefully emblazoned with a silver HP with battery like Acer UM08A31 battery, Acer UM08A71 battery, Acer UM08A72 battery, Acer UM08B71 battery, Acer Aspire One battery, Acer SQU-410 battery, Acer TravelMate 2100 battery, Acer 1556 battery, Acer BTP-89BM battery, Acer TravelMate 4600 battery, Acer AS09B35 battery, Acer Aspire 3935 battery logo with the same matte aluminum on its sides as well as on the keyboard dock's deck, sides and bottom. In a questionable decision, HP has placed both the volume rocker and the power button in the upper left and upper right corners of the back panel rather than placing them on the sides as with most other tablets.
In our testing, connecting and disconnecting the tablet from the dock was a breeze as we positioned it directly above the hinge and snapped it into place with minimal force. Though the hinge seemed extremely firm, we were able to pull the tablet out just as easily, after we slid the release latch from left to right. When the tablet is attached, the clamshell opens and closes as firmly as any notebook we've tested. Even when we poked at the screen with our finger it did not rock backward.
Click to EnlargeAt 1.5 pounds, the Envy x2's tablet isn't much heavier than the 1.44-pound iPad, despite having a screen that is nearly 2 inches larger. Perhaps because the weight is spread out across the tablet's 11.9 x 7.5 x .3-inch frame, it felt lighter in our hands than the iPad or identically-weighted Microsoft Surface with Windows RT. With the keyboard dock attached, that weight jumps up to 3.1 pounds and the thickness to .6 inches while the hinge adds about .5 inches to the length. By contrast, the identically-priced Toshiba Portege Z935 Ultrabook, which does not double as a tablet, weighs just 2.4 pounds despite its larger 13.3 inch screen.
Click to EnlargeDespite The Envy x2's modest 1366 x 768 resolution, its 11.6-inch screen provided sharp images and rich colors. Whether we were staring at the lively yellow and white flowers in Windows 8's default daisy wallpaper or gawking at the lush red and blue costumes in a 1080p Quicktime trailer for "The Avengers," colors appeared particularly vibrant.
At 261 lux on our light meter, the Envy x2's screen falls way short of the 393 tablet category average, the 373 offered by the Microsoft Surface and the Acer Iconia W700's mark of 369. However, the Acer Iconia W510 provided a similar mark of 262 lux. The Envy x2 seemed more than bright enough when viewed head on or from angles up to 45 degrees to the left or right. However, at wider angles, we found it difficult to see images through the finger prints on the display's glossy surface.
The touch experience was completely fluid and responsive. In our tests, we quickly swiped between apps, pinched to zoom, swiped down for an app bar, swiped in and back from left to show the task menu and swiped in from the right for the Charms menu. Using Windows Paint, we could draw with 5 fingers at once.

be one of our favorites

be one of our favorites

Welcome to a laptop battery specialist of the Acer Laptop Battery

We mentioned earlier that much of what makes the Folio a business machine boils down to certain software features. Many of these are wrapped up in HP's ProtecTools suite, a collection of utilities that includes a password vault, facial recognition, pre-boot authentication and SpareKey, a protocol that helps you log into the computer even if you forget the password. In the case of facial recognition, it's actually a two-step process: once the PC registers your face, it then searches for your Bluetooth phone, which would have to already be paired.

You'll have choices of operating systems, too. In addition to choosing Windows 8, you can downgrade Windows 7 -- you know, in case your business isn't quite ready for Lives Tiles and the Charms Bar. If you decide to go that route, you can actually choose between Windows 7 Pro and Home Premium, with both 32- and 64-bit options on the Pro side. The Folio is also SUSE Linux-certified, if that's what you're used to with battery such as Acer BTP-43D1 Battery, Acer TravelMate 220 Battery, Acer BTP-58A1 Battery, acer BTP-60A1 Battery, Acer TravelMate 240 Battery, Acer BTP-52EW Battery, Acer BTP-63D1 Battery, Acer BTP-42C1 Battery, acer BTP-44A3 Battery, Acer Aspire 8943G Battery, Acer Aspire 8950G Battery, Acer AS10C7E Battery.

In a perfect world, serious business machines would all come with zero crapware installed. As it is, though, you'll have to settle for "less crapware than on a consumer machine." Indeed, the load is fairly light here compared to a typical off-the-shelf PC, but there are still a few apps you might not have wanted. These include Evernote, CyberLink MediaSuite, CyberLink PhotoDirector, CyberLink PowerDVD, CyberLink PowerDirector and PDF Complete.

Like other business PCs, the Folio comes with three years of coverage, as opposed to one year for most consumer systems. That includes pick-up or carry-in service, along with toll-free, 24/7 phone support. Businesses can also arrange for on-site repairs, but that would mean upgrading the warranty, as this amenity isn't included in the standard plan.

HP sells a handful of pre-configured Folios on its site, ranging in price from $1,049 on up to $1,448. All but two of them have the Core i5 processor we mentioned; those that don't have a dual-core, 2GHz Core i7-3667U chip. Each configuration has 4GB of RAM, along with the same screen resolution and graphics. At the lower end, you'll get a 500GB 7,200RPM hard drive instead of that 180GB SSD. The $1,448 model -- the only model that's more expensive than the one we tested -- has all the same specs as our review unit, except it comes with a docking station.

It's possible you'll buy the Folio not because you need a business-grade system, per se, but because you just want a solid Ultrabook. If that's the case, you've got plenty of options, obviously, though we've so far struggled to find a standout; many have been marred by short battery life and quirky design choices.

A business Ultrabook turns

A business Ultrabook turns

Welcome to a laptop battery specialist of the Apple Laptop Battery

It's possible you'll buy the Folio not because you need a business-grade system, but because you just want a solid Ultrabook.Still, if you're willing to take a chance on a non-touch machine like the Folio, then we don't mind steering you toward one of our old favorites, the Samsung Series 9. Sammy's now selling it with Windows 8 pre-installed, so it's hardly out of date. At the time of our testing, we were impressed by pretty much everything: the lightweight, impossibly thin design, the fast performance, the bright 1,600 x 900 screen and the long battery life (granted, we tested it with Win 7). Our only caveat would be that it doesn't have a touchscreen for interacting with Windows 8 but again, if you're seriously considering the Folio that's probably not a dealbreaker anyway.

If you need the kinds of IT-friendly features offered on the Folio, though, something like the Series 9 probably isn't going to cut it. For those of you who won't consider anything other than a business machine, there's but a few options. We'd say the Folio's closest competitor might be none other than the $1,249 ThinkPad X1 Carbon (or the X1 Carbon Touch, if you do want a touchscreen after all). This, too, is a 14-inch business Ultrabook, with a 1,600 x 900 display, Ivy Bridge chipset and business features like TPM, BIOS encryption, a fingerprint reader and vPro processors for remote management. We're still waiting for a chance to test the touchscreen version, but we already know the X1 Carbon is one of the finer Ultrabooks we've tested, that high price and so-so battery like Apple PowerBook G4 15 inch Battery, Apple A1012 Battery, Apple M8511 Battery, Apple M8244 Battery, Apple A1079 Battery, Apple A1078 Battery, Apple A1148 Battery, Apple M6091 Battery life be damned.

While you're at it, you may as well consider the Dell XPS 13 ($1,000 and up) and XPS 14 ($1,100-plus), which are sold on both Dell's consumer and small business sites. Similar to the Folio and X1 Carbon, these offer business-oriented features like TPM, asset tagging, corporate images and custom BIOS. Particularly with the 14-inch model, we were impressed by the battery life and mighty graphics performance, though both offer a sophisticated design, comfortable keyboard and much-improved trackpad.

The way we feel about the EliteBook Folio 9470 reminds us of how we felt about the HP Folio 13, which we reviewed nearly a year ago. Both are buttoned-up sorts of systems: serious-looking, and with enough security features to satisfy the IT guys. And yet, conservative as they seem, they ended up being among the best Ultrabooks in their day -- so good, in fact, that we'd recommend them even to regular consumers. Compared to other Ultrabooks on the market right now, the 9470 offers longer battery life, a wider port selection, a smoother trackpad, a more comfortable keyboard and slightly faster performance. It's pricier than similarly specced models but then again, it comes with a three-year warranty, which is nice to fall back on.

Still, it's not perfect: it's thicker and heavier than competing models, it has a lower-res display and there's no touchscreen for interacting with Windows 8 (if that's what you're into). Folks who want those things should check out Lenovo's ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch, though we can't promise the battery life will be as good, as we haven't had a chance to test it yet. That said, if you're fine with 1,366 x 768 and don't see much appeal in being able to touch the display, the EliteBook Folio is a solid performer.

The Year of the Fixer

The Year of the Fixer

Welcome to a laptop battery specialist of the Apple Laptop Battery

Hear, hear, Mr. Flasbarth. Batteries are a consumable: Like the tires on your car, they will wear out with normal use. An iPhone battery, for example, is rated for just 400 charge cycles—that is, 400 times completely discharging and fully recharging. For most people, this means the battery will last about two years. So when manufacturers seal a battery into a device with industrial-strength adhesive, or make it inaccessible behind other components, they are essentially building in a death clock. If the device dies when the battery does, it's a waste of all the other longer-lasting components. Germany hasn't (yet) banned sealed batteries like Apple A1175 Battery, Apple A1185 Battery, Apple M9324 Battery, Apple M8403 Battery, Apple M7318 Battery, apple PowerBook G3 Battery, Apple PowerBook G4 Battery, but we approve the sentiment.

Repair isn't just happening in the garage anymore. At last count, 40 community repair cafés were up and running in the Netherlands alone. Café participants bring their broken items, pool their knowledge and tools, and get the product back to working condition again.

And what starts in the Netherlands doesn't stay in the Netherlands. Spurred on by the resurgent interest in tinkering, small repair cafés have started popping up all over the world. US repair collectives have picked up steam this year, too: We've chatted with repair gurus from Fixers Collective in New York, Fixit Clinic in the Bay Area, the West Seattle Fixers Collective, and the Makerspace Urbana Help Desk.

All roads eventually lead to the dump in a linear consumption model built on taking natural resources, manufacturing objects, and disposing of waste. But the earth is a closed system. We cannot simply throw our trash "away." Away doesn't exist. It never has.

Recently, a new replacement model has gained public support and momentum. Inspired by nature, the "circular economy" model imagines a consumption cycle that practically eliminates waste. Instead of moving from cradle to grave, manufactured goods follow a path from cradle to cradle. Waste becomes a resource. In February, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation (EMF) published a groundbreaking report on the environmental and economic benefits of a circular economy. As it turns out, a circular economy—focused on reuse and remanufacturing—is also a prosperous economy. The EMF estimates that the EU manufacturing sector could realise net materials cost savings worth up to $630 billion per annum towards 2025.

Of course, there is still much work to be done. We worry about the trend toward sealed devices, and manufacturers like Toshiba continue to take all their repair manuals out of consumers' hands. But repair advocates have made a lot of progress this year—and broad public support for repair continues to make that progress possible. With every law passed and openable device released, we move one step closer to building a more repairable, more sustainable future.

Anyone who still doubts

Anyone who still doubts

Welcome to a laptop battery specialist of the IBM Laptop Battery

Anyone who still doubts that people care about sustainable electronics has not been paying attention this year. We are officially dubbing 2012 as "the year of the fixer": More and more people are breaking out their screwdrivers, and the headlines have been full of repair stories. The iPhone 5 is the most repairable iPhone ever. There are fewer toxic chemicals in new cell phones than ever before. A draft of a new green cell phone standard, UL 110, requires that manufacturers secure cases with screws rather than glues. And Sprint announced that all of their phones will meet this standard—they will be openable, modular, and repairable.

There was so much going on this year that we missed some exciting repair news. So, here are five more important repair stories that fell through our cracks:

Massachusetts voters passed a statewide measure in November asserting the freedom to service their cars wherever they want—at the dealership, at an independent service shop, or in their own driveways. The Motor Vehicle Owners' Right to Repair with battery such as Lenovo FRU 92P1182 Battery, Lenovo 40Y8313 Battery, Lenovo 57Y6452 Battery, Lenovo L09S8L09 Battery, Lenovo L08S4X03 Battery, Lenovo Ideapad U110 Battery, Lenovo L08S6D21 Battery, Lenovo 3000 G230G Battery, Lenovo 42T4815 Battery, Lenovo 57Y4565 Battery, Lenovo 40Y8322 Battery, Lenovo FRU 92P1188 Battery Act makes it illegal for any manufacturer to sell or lease a new car without allowing the owner access to the same diagnostic and repair information that manufacturers have. Independent repair technicians—who directly compete with major dealerships for business—must also be given access to the service and repair documents.

Rallying behind the cry of "it's your car, you paid for it, you should get it fixed where you want," voters approved the ballot measure by a whopping 86%. The Massachusetts Right to Repair Committee called the vote an "historic victory for car owners"—and indeed the bill is the first of its kind passed in the United States. Perhaps the law will pave the road for more sweeping national repair reform.

This month, HP opened the first e-waste processing plant in East Africa. Technology has moved quickly into the developing world—thanks largely to cell phone usage, Africa has had one of the highest internet usage growth rates in the world over the last decade. When those devices break, they need to be disposed of somehow. Informal e-waste processing can be dangerous: Practices such as open burning and dissolving circuit boards in acid baths damage workers' health. So it is vital that African nations develop safer ways to process e-waste.

This plant is a triple win: It's a win for the environment. It's a win for HP, which will make profit off the recycled e-waste. And it's a win for the local community, which gets an influx of skilled, permanent jobs.

People in high places are beginning to recognize that difficult-to-replace electronics batteries are an environmental nightmare. President of the German Federal Environmental Agency, Jochen Flasbarth, proposed banning devices with glued down-batteries like the iPad and the MacBook Retina. "That the battery component cannot be easily replaced is grotesque," he said in an interview with Frankfurter Rundschau, "They must prohibit it."

inShare An IBM research team has created a 90nm computer chip that integrates both optical components and electrical circuits, in a development that should make the transfer of data quicker, more efficient and cheaper. Silicon nanophotonics technology means that frequencies of light, rather than electrical signals, will be used in the transmission of data. The breakthrough represents the first time this particular technology has been successfully built into a sub-100nm chip. It will predominantly be directed towards large-scale systems that need to process Big Data, though it could eventually reach consumer products.

British startup Eyetease has revealed that it is bringing free Wi-Fi to London's black cabs in early 2013. The advert-funded service, called CabWifi, will provide passengers with free Internet access in exchange for watching a 15 with battery like Lenovo 42T4895 Battery, Lenovo 57Y4559 Battery, Lenovo FRU 42T4789 Battery, Lenovo ThinkPad X120e Battery, Lenovo 57Y6459 Battery, Lenovo 3000 N100 Battery, Lenovo IdeaPad U165 Battery, Lenovo 121001141 Battery, Lenovo 57Y6634 Battery, Lenovo L09S6Y14 Battery, Lenovo IdeaPad S100 Battery, Lenovo 3000 C100 Battery second advert every 15 minutes. This means that black cabs will join the London Underground as the latest form of transport to offer Wi-Fi in the capital. EyeTease anticipates that its forthcoming service will prove popular with tourists hoping to avoid data roaming charges, and claims that it will "uniquely" switch between 3G and 4G connectivity. A specific network provider has not yet been revealed.

Lauded game developer Valve has long been rumoured to be developing a TV-compatible PC tailored for living room use. Company co-founder Gabe Newell has just confirmed the truth behind said speculation, setting a 2013 planned release for the colloquially nicknamed "Steam Box." Newell believes PC gaming holds advantages over its console rivals, and predicts the creation and subsequent rollout of similar living room-friendly offerings from various other PC manufacturers.

Sony has struggled to compete in the smartphone arena lately, and Sandra Vogel's review of the Sony Xperia J highlights just why. While the device has some "encouraging" design features, it ultimately fails to impress in other areas. Sandra found the handset's general performance to be slow and buggy, with apps seeming surprisingly slow for a 1GHz single-core processor. Meanwhile, Sony's Android 4.0 skin and the device's camera are equally disappointing. "The Sony Xperia J is good in the looks department, and has some strong points on the features front including a couple of neat widgets and good battery life. But it is seriously let down by very poor speed and jerky performance," she concluded. Follow the link for a more in-depth look at the Sony Xperia J.

Cioffi worked for years, both inside and outside the administration of Gov. Howard Dean, to persuade Husky, a Canadian manufacturer of plastic moldings, to open a plant in Milton that would pay good wages to several hundred Vermonters. Husky finally did build its factory, but job numbers there never spiraled as high as boosters had projected.

GBIC's most visible contribution to the Burlington-area economy takes the form of the seven industrial parks with battery such as Lenovo L08S6D12 Battery, Lenovo IdeaPad U330 Battery, Lenovo 43R1954 Battery, Lenovo 3000 Y300 Battery, Lenovo 40Y8318 Battery, Lenovo FRU 42T5251 Battery, Lenovo ThinkPad X60 Tablet PC Battery, Lenovo 57Y6455 Battery, Lenovo IdeaPad Z560 Battery, Lenovo IdeaPad B570 Battery, Lenovo 43R2499 Battery, Lenovo FRU 42T5264 Battery it has built since its launch in 1954. One of those manufacturer clusters, in Burlington's South End, was the home of a start-up that GBIC "took a gamble on," Cioffi recalls. Helping to finance a facility for a snowboard maker paid off. Burton Snowboards grew to become one of Vermont's greatest economic-development success stories.

The heroic era of heavy industry ended a long time ago, however — both in Vermont and nationally. Manufacturing accounted for about 20 percent of the jobs in Chittenden County around the start of this century; today, fewer than 12 percent of workers in the Burlington area produce goods. GBIC hasn't built an industrial park since 1983, but it's moving toward converting an unused portion of IBM property into a field of corporate dreams in Essex.

Cioffi says he realizes that the GBIC moniker may seem archaic or misleading. In recognition that "industrial" is no longer really where it's at, the entity's board considered changing the "I" in the title to "innovation," Cioffi relates. But a branding expert recommended against the revision on the grounds that it's simpler just to refer to the operation as "GBIC," without spelling out the acronym.

Although nothing in its name says "improved workforce training," that's also part of Cioffi's job in relation to both job retention and recruitment. He says that the number of jobs available in the state won't matter much if there aren't enough qualified Vermonters to fill them.

It's hard to say whether Cioffi performs well in regard to preserving jobs, according to Vermont auditor-elect Doug Hoffer, another Democrat/Progressive. "I've never seen a meaningful indicator of that kind of effectiveness. How would one quantify success in preventing jobs from going away?" Hoffer wonders.

posted 11 hours agoCommentsAndroid smartphones can have a pretty bad reputation when it comes to battery life, though that reputation has definitely improved in general over time. A new report updated today from the Root Uninstaller Team (who created Battery Stats Plus for Google's mobile OS) ranks the top 15 and worst 15 Android devices based on statistics shared through their app. There's a huge variance between the best and the worst, and the ones on top might not be the flagship devices you're looking for.

As you can see in the list, Root Uninstaller looks at both Android tablets and Android smartphones, which you might expect to skew the results a little bit. But despite a dominating performance from the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, the list of the top 15 performers was a healthy mix of phones and slates. Coming in a close second with over 60 hours of battery such as Lenovo 57Y6266 Battery, Lenovo L08S6D02 Battery, Lenovo 3000 G530 Battery, Lenovo IdeaPad G430 Battery, Lenovo IdeaPad Z360 Battery, Lenovo IdeaPad Y430g Battery, Lenovo 45K2221 Battery, Lenovo 42T4833 Battery, Lenovo ThinkPad T410s Battery, Lenovo FRU 42T4690 Battery, Lenovo 57Y6352 Battery, Lenovo IdeaPad U350 Battery life on average was the LG Optimus Pro, a phone released in July with a hardware keyboard and relatively small 240×320 display running Android 2.3.3 with a 3 MP camera. It's on odd duck, with its QWERTY and VGA video, but it's cheap, and according to this list, if it's battery life you're after most of all, you can do no better than the Optimus Pro.

The Motorola DROID RAZR HD also ranks pretty highly, highest among more up-market devices, with north of 40 hours battery life on average, and the HTC One V doesn't rank that far behind with 40 hours. The RAZR HD's battery life is something I can actually personally attest to: it's a smartphone that keeps going long after I expect it to have faded. Admittedly, I'm not generally using it that much since it isn't my main device, but there's no denying it outlasts most of its competition by a wide margin.

Way down at the other end of the spectrum, you'll find the Samsung Galaxy Mini (two versions) with just over four hours each, and the Sony Xperia X8 and LG Optimus G. Samsung appears a lot on the list of the bottom 15, but then it also appears a lot on the top list, too. In fact, one thing this list serves to point out is just how much Samsung now dominates the Android device ecosystem.

Overall, Root Uninstaller's list covers 474 Android devices and spans 5,585 user-submitted battery reports, so it has a decent-sized sampling, plus you see a lot of synchronicity with what reviewers and users have shared anecdotally about device battery life. The average life overall for Android devices is 20.4 hours, by the way, or just under a full day, and the top battery killer apps are generally actually boring system processes, as well as something called "Cowboy." Battery life isn't bad overall based on these numbers, but it's not great either: next generation battery tech, whatever that ends up being, can't arrive soon enough.
