What's Going to Sell Windows RT Tablets?

Microsoft's first Surface tablet with Windows RT has been released at a price that's substantially higher than competing Android tablets, so Microsoft's hardware partners have decided to ... sell it for more?

Both Asus' VivoTab RT and Dell's XPS 10 will be priced equal to or higher than the Surface with Windows RT, which has been priced at $499 (or $599 with a Touch Cover).

The VivoTab RT is only sold with a keyboard, for $599. Dell's XPS 10 starts at $499, but rises to $679 with a keyboard dock.

At least one analyst is already saying that the Surface RT is too expensive. And even though early reviews of the Surface RT are unenthusiastic, demand is robust. Right now, the wait for a basic, $499, version ships is two to three weeks, according to a note on Microsoft's Store page. The wait for Dell's 32-GB and 64-GB XPS 10's, with or without a keyboard, reaches to Dec. 7, according to Dell's order page.

The Surface tablet represents a break Microsoft's standard operating procedure. That is, the company usually develops an operating system that it sells to partners who install it in their hardware. Microsoft's entry into the tablet hardware has rankled partners like Acer, which so far has yet to build a Windows RT tablet.

HP also hasn't released a Windows RT tablet, although a version running Windows 8, the Envy X2, is available for $850. HP chief executive Meg Whitman criticized Microsoft's Surface at a Gartner conference Wednesday, claiming it "lacks a keyboard you can do real work on.".

Dell representatives said that its keyboard dock contained two USB ports, an HDMI port stereo speakers, and an auxiliary battery. Dell also said that its keyboard dock enables people to work in clamshell mode, away from a tablet or flat surface -- a shot, deliberate or not, at the Surface RT's fixed kickstand.

Asus is differentiating itself with a 4G model from AT&T; the Surface RT is Wi-Fi only. The firm is still withholding pricing, though an Asus representative said in email that the market will bear an additional $100 for a full keyboard and trackpad plus an additional six or seven hours of battery and connectivity ports,"

The company will also sell an ElitePad accessory called SmartJacket, a hard-cover case with an integrated keyboard, battery, two USB ports and an SD card slot. The ElitePad 900 slots into the jacket, and provides an extra eight hours of battery life to the tablet, while adding about 1 pound (453 grams) to the overall weight.

The tablet also provides manageability and serviceability found in the company's EliteBook laptops, Gupta said.

The tablet has an HP BIOS which enables some features to be turned off when the tablet is in a specific location. The unit can also be bricked if lost or stolen, and HP is working with LANDesk on location-based services.

The Dell XPS 14 is a bigger and badder Ultrabook. It has a 14" display that slightly outclasses the 13.3" Ultrabook standard and it weighs 4.6 pounds rather than the usual 3. That resolution also tops the standard 1366 x 768 resolution found on slightly smaller 13.3" Ultrabook displays. The 300 nit brightness display has good contrast, though blacks aren't wildly deep. Overall it's quite sharp with pleasing color saturation and movies look good, so we won't complain.

The Dell XPS 14 starts at $1,099 for the 1.5GHz Intel Core i5-3317U with Intel HD 4000 graphics, 4 gigs of DDR3 RAM and a 500 gig 5400 RPM hard drive augmented with a 32 gig caching SSD. The machine has gigabit Ethernet, dual band Intel WiFi N-6235 and Bluetooth. Moving up to the Core i7 ULV with NVidia graphics will set you back $1,499.

Storage comes by way of a 750GB hard drive, with Windows 7 Home Premium being the OS of choice. As was the case with the vanilla 17R, the drive has the Dell Stage media suite and Dell DataSafe backup software preinstalled. It also has a handful of bloatware products installed, such as trial versions of McAfee Security Centre and Nero. Rounding out the feature set are Wi-Fi, bluetooth, and WiDi wireless options.

A 2.3GHz Intel Core i7-3610QM (Ivy Bridge) processor is at the heart of the 17R Special Edition, meaning it's no slouch when it comes to benchmarking. The notebook performed well in our multimedia tests, turning in scores of 1 minute and 19 seconds, and 3 minutes and 21 seconds respectively on our Handbrake and Photoshop CS5 benchmark tests. In comparison, the Lenovo Y580 (which costs £999) managed a slightly better Handbrake score, but lagged behind the 17R Special Edition by 4 seconds on the Photoshop test.

In the CPU intensive Cinebench R11.5 test, the Inspiron 17R Special Edition managed a time of 6 with battery like Dell 8U443 battery, Dell Latitude X200 battery, Dell 312-0058 battery, Dell 3J426 battery, Dell 8H663 battery, Dell 4K001 battery, Dell YD624 battery, Dell DF230 battery, Dell Precision M4300 battery, Dell Latitude D531 battery, Dell HX198 battery, Dell CR036 battery minutes and 15 seconds, and in that case was outperformed by the Lenovo Y580 by 7 seconds, although that's hardly a difference to fret over.

The 17R Special Edition has 6GB of system memory on board, and it uses a switchable graphics solution to deliver enhanced GPU performance when it's needed, such as when gaming or using other graphics-intensive applications. An Nvidia GeForce GT 650M supplies the extra horsepower when the integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 solution won't suffice.

The Nvidia GPU produced an impressive 93 frames per second (fps) on our medium quality Crysis DX10 test, but could only muster 23 fps on the high quality test. The Y580 scored 97 fps (medium quality) and 13 fps (high quality). Results from our Lost Planet 2 DX9 tests were similar; the Dell notebook scored 82 fps (medium) and 29 fps (high) and the Lenovo Y580 scored 71 fps (medium) and 28 fps (high). You'll want at least 30 fps to ensure smooth gaming, so plan on dialling back some eye candy if you want to take advantage of the 17R Special Edition's native 1920 x 1080 resolution.

The Inspiron couldn't complete our MobileMark 2007 benchmark test, so we ran our comparable 10-hour DVD rundown test to gauge battery life. The 48Wh, 6-cell battery lasted 2 hours and 20 minutes, which is enough to get through a typical movie, but a very poor showing – and almost an hour shy of the Inspiron 15R Special Edition's longevity. The Y580 gave us 4 hours and 41 minutes of unplugged power, although even that is way behind the likes of the HP Envy 17 (2012) which lasted for over 7 hours.

The Dell Inspiron 17R Special Edition is an attractive desktop replacement laptop offering serious productivity chops and enough graphics muscle to satisfy all but the most demanding gamers. Its 17.3in screen is ideal for watching movies and playing games, and its audio output, while not stellar, is still better than what you get with most laptops.

Other than a smattering of bloatware, the Inspiron 17R Special Edition's only shortcomings are its weak battery life and lack of a Blu-ray drive. The Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 is a comparable machine, but stronger in some areas – most notably battery life, and its Blu-ray capability – although it does cost a little more (£100 extra). On balance, we'd recommend pushing for the Lenovo machine, but that doesn't stop this Dell notebook being a sterling, somewhat more wallet-friendly option.

Billed as a high-performance version of the popular Inspiron laptop series and featuring a premium design, Dell's Inspiron 17R Special Edition (£899 direct) hits the mark on both accounts. The 17R's third-generation Intel Core i7 processor, switchable Nvidia graphics solution, and mSATA drive provide formidable horsepower, and the beautiful 17.3in full HD display is first rate. However, all isn't perfection with this media notebook…

With this Special Edition, Dell engineers took the chassis used on the standard Inspiron 17R and added some nice touches, including a textured matte black lid and a matching aluminium keyboard deck. Rounded corners and matte silver trim wrapped around the base and lid give the Inspiron 17R with battery such as Dell Inspiron 1720 battery, dell Inspiron 1525 battery, dell Inspiron 1526 battery, Dell HP297 battery, dell GW240 battery, dell RN873 battery, dell XR693 battery, dell 0XR693 battery, dell 312-0625 battery, Dell Latitude X200 battery, dell PP25L battery, Dell WR053 battery Special Edition a sleek, understated look.

With dimensions of 417 x 277 x 38mm (WxDxH), this 3.4kg laptop is not very travel friendly, but you'd be hard pressed to find a 17in desktop replacement that is. For example, the HP Envy 17 (2012 version) is the same weight.

The 17.3in display is a beauty to behold. Unlike the vanilla 17R, the Special Edition's display has a non-reflective matte coating that won't make you feel like you're staring into a dark mirror. The 1,920 x 1,080 panel handles full HD (1080p) with aplomb, delivering excellent image detail and vibrant colours. My 1080p test clip, The Magic of Flight, looked bright and sharp, as did the PC version of Duke Nukem Forever. Additionally, side angle viewing was much better than the basic Dell 17R.

The full size chiclet-style keyboard is roomy and comfortable. It has a number pad on the right and is illuminated so you can find your way around in the dark. At the top of the deck are three Dashboard buttons, one of which is user programmable.

One button launches the Windows Mobility Centre, where you can change display and keyboard brightness levels, check battery status and change power settings, and enable or disable wireless. The other button opens Dell's Audio applet where you can adjust bass, treble, and other audio settings. The touchpad has a smooth surface and two wide mouse buttons; both are responsive and the pad provides plenty of room for gesture control.

A pair of Skullcandy-branded speakers embedded in the front edge of the chassis, and a subwoofer built in to the bottom of the base deliver crisp audio with a bit of bottom. Granted, you don't get wall-shaking bass from the tiny subwoofer, but it is a cut above the typical two speaker array found on most laptops.

Ports are plentiful. On the left are two USB 3.0 ports, headphone and microphone jacks, VGA and HDMI video outputs, and the power jack. A 7-in-1 media card reader is located along the front edge of the chassis, and the right side hosts two additional USB 3.0 ports and an Ethernet port. Unfortunately, this model comes with a DVD multi-drive rather than a Blu-ray drive, which means you'll be watching DVD movies in standard definition.

HD Graphics 4000 integrated

The Inspiron 17R uses the same third-generation Intel Core i5-3210M (2.5 GHz) processor as the Dell Inspiron 15R, and both are equipped with 6 GB of RAM, so it's not surprising that their PCMark 7 scores (2,676 for the 17R; 2,645 for the 15R) were nearly identical. The fact that it blew the 1.6 GHz AMD-based Toshiba P775D (1,564) out of the water also came as no surprise.

Results were similar on our Cinebench R11.5 CPU benchmark; the 17R's score of 2.84 was just a heartbeat shy of the 15R (2.85) and the VAIO E15 (2.86) but trounced the Toshiba P775D (2.10). The 17R made short work of our Photoshop (3:53) and Handbrake (1:41) multimedia tests, beating the Sony E15 by two seconds and trailing it by two seconds on the Handbrake test.

Armed with Intel's HD Graphics 4000 integrated graphics solution, the 17R gave us a barely playable 22 fps on our medium quality Lost Planet 2 DX9 test while running at a relatively low resolution (1,024-by-768). That dropped to an unplayable 9 fps when we set effects to high quality and used the notebook's native (1,600-by-900) resolution. It performed similarly on our Crysis DX10 tests; it managed 25.1 fps in medium mode and 6.1 fps in high quality mode. The Sony VAIO E15's scores were higher, but not by much. The Toshiba P775D, on the other hand, outperformed them all, thanks to its discrete AMD Radeon HD 6620G graphics solution.

As was the case with the 15R, the 17R was unable to complete the MobileMark 2007 battery like dell 1G222 battery, dell BAT3151L8 battery, dell Latitude X300 battery, dell W0465 battery, dell Inspiron 2000 battery, dell Latitude LS battery, dell 2834T battery, dell 4834T battery, dell Inspiron 1520 battery, dell Inspiron 1521 battery, dell XPS M1350 battery, dell Inspiron 1318 battery test. Instead, we ran our comparable 10-hour DVD rundown test, which yielded a mere 2 hours and 55 minutes of battery life. That's significantly shorter than the 15R (4 hours and 29 minutes) and light-years shy of the 9 hour 33 minutes of MobileMark battery life we got from the HP Pavilion DV7-6b55dx.

The Dell Inspiron 17R (model 5720) won't wow you with blazing graphics performance, and its battery life is woefully short, but it is more than capable of handling your everyday home and small office computing tasks. The 17.3-inch display delivers bright, crisp image quality, despite the reflective coating, and the 17R's audio output is impressive for a budget notebook. That said, the Sony VAIO E15 offers slightly better graphics performance, longer battery life, and an illuminated keyboard, and as such remains our Editors' Choice for budget laptop.

Dell Inspiron 17R-5720

The 17R's chassis looks exactly the same as the15R, only bigger. It has a dark gray plastic lid (dubbed Moon Silver), rounded corners, and silver trim around the top and base. The lid is easily removed and can be replaced with a Lotus Pink or Peacock Blue colored lid, which Dell sells for $29.99 each. The chassis is fairly bulky; it weighs 7.2 pounds and is 1.5 inches thick. By way of comparison, the Toshiba Satellite P775D-S7144 weighs only 6.6 pounds and the HP Pavilion DV7-6b55dx weighs 6.9 pounds.

Beneath the lid is a brightly lit 17.3 inch display with a resolution of 1,600 by 900, which is standard issue for a big screen notebook in this price range. You can't get full 1080p on this panel like you can with the more expensive Dell Inspiron 17R with battery such as dell Inspiron E1505 battery, dell Inspiron 1501 battery, dell GD761 battery, dell KD476 battery, dell TD347 battery, dell Inspiron 1000 battery, dell Inspiron 2200 battery, dell 312-0292 battery, dell INSPIRON 2600 battery, dell INSPIRON 2650 battery, Dell Inspiron 1470 battery, dell Inspiron 1570 battery Special Edition (7720), but it does a very good job of displaying HD content at 720p nonetheless. Image detail is sharp and colors have pop, but the panel's shiny coating tends to be too reflective when the background is dark. Off angle viewing is a narrow as well. There's a 720p webcam embedded in the screen's upper bezel and a chrome Inspiron logo on the lower bezel.

The full size island-style keyboard features a numeric pad on the right but lacks the backlighting feature that you get with the Sony VAIO E15 (SVE15116FXS). The action is firm but not at all stiff, and the keys provide a comfortable typing experience. The touchpad has the same smooth brushed metal finish used on the keyboard deck, as do the mouse buttons. One of the three Dashboard keys at the top of the deck is user programmable, one launches the Windows Mobility control panel, and the third launches Dell's Audio control panel.

You'll have to contend with a smattering of bloatware but many of the Dell-branded apps are quite useful. Dell Stage makes it easy to view and share multimedia files (photos, music, video) and Dell DataSafe provides an online backup service that safeguards your data from hard drive failures, theft, and software corruption. The drive also comes with Windows 7 Home Premium, Skype, and a webcam utility.

3G/4G wireless connectivity is noticeably missing as the entire line of systems available for pre-order ship with Wi-Fi support only. Alison Gardner, director of product group brand and messaging at Dell, said mobile broadband options will be offered in future models.

Of course, Dell isn't getting around to shipping the XPS 10 tablet until sometime in mid-December so that could make your decision a bit easier if you're looking to get started with a Windows 8 slate ASAP.

The new Dell Inspiron 17R (model 5720) desktop replacement laptop offers solid Core-i5 performance at a very reasonable price. You don't get much in the way of battery life and the integrated graphics solution is nothing to rave about, but it is a good deal nonetheless.

By John R. Delaney The Dell Inspiron 17R (model 5720) is a desktop replacement laptop that delivers impressive performance at a budget-friendly ($699 list) price point. It offers the very latest Intel (Ivy Bridge) technology, a bright (albeit reflective) 17-inch screen, and a generous amount of hard drive storage. As with its smaller sibling, the 15R, you can change the lid color to suit your mood, and it's outfitted with your basic Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radio options. However, it is hampered by short battery life and narrow viewing angles, and its integrated GPU can't handle graphics-intensive games.

Beneath the lid is a brightly lit 17.3 inch display with a resolution of 1,600 by 900, which is standard issue for a big screen notebook in this price range. You can't get full 1080p on this panel like you can with the more expensive Dell Inspiron 17R Special Edition (7720), but it does a very good job of displaying HD content at 720p nonetheless. Image detail is sharp and colors have pop, but the panel's shiny coating tends to be too reflective when the background is dark. Off angle viewing is a narrow as well. There's a 720p webcam embedded in the screen's upper bezel and a chrome Inspiron logo on the lower bezel.

Being a relatively large notebook, you would expect the E5530 to be brimming with ports. However, the liberal spacing of these ports around the chassis edge makes the complement look a little more meagre than it actually is. Somewhat unusually, the power connection is on the left rear corner, and the Ethernet port on the right rear corner, with a USB 2.0 port alongside at the back of the machine. On the left can be found full-sized HDMI, plus a USB 3.0/eSATA combo port, a second USB 3.0 port, a SD card reader, and an ExpressCard/54 slot for expansion.

A clever soul at Dell has turned the plastic spacer filling the ExpressCard slot into a small ruler, wire diameter measurement tool, and letter opener. This is maybe not an essential feature, given that the ruler is only 2in with battery such as dell Latitude D510 battery, dell Latitude D520 battery, dell Latitude D600 battery, dell Latitude D610 battery, dell 312-0068 battery, dell 6Y270 battery, dell 1X793 battery, dell C1295 battery, dell Inspiron 1100 battery, dell Inspiron 5100 battery, dell Vostro V130 battery, dell PRW6G battery long, but it shows an amusing level of design imagination. It's also worth noting that the ExpressCard slot can be specified as a SmartCard reader instead if required.

The right-hand side is home to the aforementioned optical drive, another USB 2.0 port, and VGA connectivity. Strangely, there is just a headphone/microphone combo port, when there would easily have been space for separate audio connections. Wireless networking includes 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0. There are also mobile broadband options for £115.20 extra (inc VAT). These include HSPA+ or Gobi 3000 and EVDO-HSPA, depending on your travelling needs. There's even a modem option, for just £12 extra.

With its midrange Core i5, the E5530's performance is unsurprisingly midrange as well. The result of 3.1 in Cinebench R11.5's rendering test is on par with what we would expect from this processor, as is the OpenGL result of 13.77 for Intel HD 4000 graphics. The 3DMark06 and 3DMark11 results of 4,382 and 620 respectively show that this notebook could throw its hand to the odd game-related task, but is no entertainment special - this is a Latitude after all, not a notebook from the Inspiron XPS range.

The battery lasted 113 minutes in our intensive rundown test, which stresses processor and graphics as much as possible until the power gives out. This is a mediocre result, placing the E5530 somewhere between pure desktop replacements like Toshiba's Satellite L855-118 and true road warriors like HP's Folio 13. You will be able to watch a movie or two on a journey, or do more than half a day's work, but not a full day on the road. However, this is with the standard 60Wh battery. There are also 87 and 97Wh options, which should extend endurance by as much as 50 per cent. The battery is easily replaced, so a second unit would also be an option.

Dells's Latitude E5530 Advanced is a solid multi-purpose portable. It offers a decent level of performance for a reasonable price, although if you do plan to work away from the power socket for extended periods, one of the larger units or a second battery would be a necessity. And if you need a mobile workstation or a portable for occasional family entertainment, a similarly sized notebook with discrete graphics would be a better choice.

Dell Latitude E5530 Advanced

You can pay a lot for style, and sometimes this is too much at the expense of functionality. You might end up opting for a smaller screen, less expansion potential, and a slower processor - just for appearances sake - whilst still paying over the odds. If you're willing to settle for something that is more conventional in appearance, you can get a lot more for your money. The Dell Latitude E5530 illustrates this well, with prices starting at £538.80 (inc VAT), although our Advanced review sample would set you back around £155 more than that.

This is not to say that the E5530 Advanced is an unattractive notebook with battery like dell F5136 battery, dell 312-0306 battery, dell 312-0305 battery, dell D5561 battery, dell G5345 battery, dell Inspiron 500m battery, dell Inspiron 510m battery, dell Inspiron 600m battery, dell Latitude D500 battery, dell Latitude D505 battery, dell Vostro 1220 battery, dell P649N battery. The subtly angled corners to the lid and base, lid bevelling and silvered edges are stylish enough, although the plastic materials are somewhat unexciting. The screen is a 15.6in unit with either 1,366 x 768 or 1,920 x 1,080 pixels resolution (our model had the latter) and an anti-glare surface that is a little more shiny than some, but also has richer colours. Viewing angles are good, particularly in the horizontal direction. Audio from the built-in speakers is also above average. There is plenty of volume available, and only a little distortion at the maximum setting, plus better bass response than many, making the E5530 a good choice for multimedia duties.

The keyboard is comfortable to use. The action feels a little springy, but typing for hours would be perfectly acceptable. The keys are close to the dimensions of a full-sized desktop keyboard, and there's a separate numerical keypad to the right. Separate audio level and mute buttons are located between the keyboard and screen on the left, although the playback buttons have been rather innocuously included as part of the numerical keypad on the right, where you might at first fail to notice they are there. The touchpad, however, feels quite small and cramped, with some erratic behaviour, although the buttons are large and responsive.

When it comes to the core specification, the E5530 Advanced is decidedly mid-range. There are E5530 options up to Intel Core i7 3520M, but our model was supplied with a Core i5 3320M. We saw the same processor in Toshiba's Portege R930-116 and Tecra R940-1CW. This is a 2.6GHz 35W CPU, but with Intel's usual Turbo Boost and HyperThreading enhancements. In this case, a single core can increase to 3.3GHz when required, whilst the dual physical cores are split into four virtual ones for improved multi-threaded performance.

The processor is partnered with 4GB of 1,600MHz DDR SDRAM, although 8GB can also be specified. The free DIMM slot is accessible beneath a large panel on the base of the E5530, so memory can be user-upgraded at a future date, too. You may want to do this at some point, as the Intel HD 4000 integrated graphics takes some system memory for its own usage. Thanks to the latter, Dell hasn't included discrete graphics with the E5530. Whilst we have found HD 4000 a major improvement over HD 3000, and certainly up to the occasional game, if you're looking for a notebook to double as general family entertainment centre, the Intel graphics will still be a limit on your enjoyment.

Dell also hasn't chosen to supply a solid state disk for main storage, which is no surprise at this price, although these are available as options. Instead a conventional 500GB Western Digital Scorpio Black hard disk is included. This has a 7,200rpm rotational speed and 16MB of cache, so is relatively sprightly in its class. There's also an optical drive available, in the shape of a HL-DT-ST G50N from Hitachi-LG Data Storage. This is a 8x DVD rewriter with DVD RAM support. The E5530 also has a built-in SD card reader, although this doesn't appear to support MemoryStick.

Dell Unveils Competitively Priced

The market will soon bear that out. Dell just announced the XPS 10 tablet, Latitude 10 tablet, Latitude 6430u Notebook, OptiPlex 9010 all-in-one with touch and the Inspiron 15z. That's on top of the XPS 12 convertible, XPS One 27 all-in-one with touch and Inspiron One 23 all-in-one with touch that were announced last week.

"This is the mainstream lineup, refreshed for Windows 8. Essentially, Win 8 can run on anything Win 7 can run on. So, there's not much change to the hardware," Roger Kay, principal analyst at Endpoint Technologies Associates, told us. "The specialty products, the XPS 12 convertible laptop and XPS One 27 all-in-one were announced separately. This is the rest of them coming along. The whole consumer lineup will go over to Win 8 pretty rapidly after launch."

Designed for mobile professionals, the XPS 10 promises a tablet experience that boosts work productivity. In fact, Dell says it offers laptop-like productivity in a tablet form factor so users can transition from work projects to personal pursuits. The tablet is priced competitively at $499.

The Latitude 10 is a 10-inch tablet with multimedia features, accessory compatibility, and full compatibility with current Windows applications. The Latitude 10 plugs into existing management consoles, features a swappable battery and optional security features such as Dell Data Protection-Encryption for encryption from the hard drive to USB port.

Healthcare and government users may opt for a Latitude 10 equipped with a fingerprint and smart card reader for two-factor authentication that will come to market in early 2013. The Latitude 10 also offers up to 18 hours of battery life and an optional productivity dock and active stylus.

The Latitude 6430u is Dell's first business Ultrabook. It offers a wireless docking based on WiGig technology, which allows devices to communicate wirelessly at multi-gigabit speeds for data, video and audio. Meanwhile, the Inspiron 15z Ultrabook has an optional touchscreen interface and is less than 1 inch thick. The Latitude 6430u runs $899 and the Inspiron 15z runs $749.

I asked her to share her thoughts on Dell's social-media journey, its accomplishments and lessons learned–lessons for all marketers seeking to effectively navigate and build brand engagement via the social web. It's been a journey. We've learned so much along the way, but we have stayed true to our company's roots of really "listening" to our customers. We launched our blog, Direct2Dell, with a focus on customer conversations in 2006. Around that time, we also began proactively engaging with customers and other stakeholders who were talking about us – positively or negatively – to listen to their successes and challenges and help address their needs. In 2007, we took this a step further and launched IdeaStorm. The site was very novel at the time as we would ask customers to evaluate our products and solutions and to give us their ideas on how we can improve to better meet their needs. The community votes on ideas, and those that surface to the top get a very close look by Dell. These were two of the early programs, but we've made huge strides since then.

Today, we look to social to help us be a better company and deliver better products and solutions. Social media is far more than a tool — it's an extension of our brand, which is all about enabling people everywhere to use technology to grow and thrive. From training 10,000 employees in our Social Media & Communities University program to be brand advocates online, to listening and engaging in conversations through our Social Media Listening Command Center to our in-person Social Think Tanks where we exchange insights to shape our business, I'm proud of how far we have come. And every day I learn something new about how we can leverage social to better serve our customers.

What needed to happen first in order for Dell to be successful at harnessing the power of social media?

For us, it was pretty simple. Our customers were using social media, so we needed to be there too. Listening, engaging in conversation and building relationships helps us be a better IT partner. Dealing directly with customers is part of Dell's roots, so we saw great adoption and support at all levels of the company.

Dell Inspiron 15R 7520

In a world full of sleek and slim Ultrabooks, the Dell Inspiron 15R 7520 looks enormous. This 15.6-inch laptop is bulky, heavy (7.4 pounds), and not terribly stylish. But it does have some surprises under the hood—namely, four USB 3.0 ports, a full HD screen, and solid overall performance.

Our review model, which costs $1100, sports a third-generation Intel Core i7-3612QM CPU, 8GB of RAM, and a 1TB hard drive spinning at 5400 rpm. It also features an AMD Radeon HD 7730M discrete graphics card, built-in Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi 802.11n, and a Blu-ray Disc player. The Inspiron 15R 7520 runs the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium.

In PCWorld's WorldBench 7 benchmark tests, the Inspiron 15R 7520 with battery such as Dell BATDW00L Battery, Dell 1X793 Battery, Dell BAT1194 Battery, Dell Precision M20 Battery, dell F5635 battery, dell YF976 battery, dell C5974 battery, dell U4873 battery, Dell Inspiron XPS M170 Battery, Dell Inspiron XPS M1710 Battery, Dell 451-11473 Battery, Dell Inspiron N301 Battery did well, earning a score of 137. This score means that the Inspiron 15R 7520 was 37 percent faster than our standard testing model, which carries a second-generation Intel Core i5 desktop processor and 8GB of RAM. Although 137 is a good score for the all-purpose laptops category, it isn't excellent: For example, the Alienware M14x, an all-purpose laptop designed for gamers, posted a mark of 143 on WorldBench 7.

The Inspiron 15R 7520 performed very well on individual tests. First of all, it had a startup time of 22.3 seconds, which is quick for a non-Ultrabook laptop; by comparison, the HP Envy Sleekbook 6z-1000 took twice as long (45.9 seconds) to start up. The Inspiron 15R 7520 also did well in our Web performance and office productivity tests, producing 13.5 frames per second in the former and achieving a score of 4218 in the latter.

The Inspiron 15R 7520's discrete AMD graphics card helped to boost its graphics performance. In our Crysis 2 graphics tests, the 7520 managed frame rates ranging from 12.7 frames per second (maximum quality settings, 1920-by-1080-pixel resolution) to 63.2 fps (low quality settings, 800-by-600-pixel resolution). While those are good scores for average all-purpose laptops, they're not quite the frame rates you need if you want to play a lot of graphics-intensive games. The Alienware M14x, for instance, carries an Nvidia GeForce GT 650M graphics card, and it achieved a rate of 94.7 fps on our low-quality, 800-by-600-pixel Crysis 2 test (the M14x does not have a full HD screen, and therefore we could not evaluate it on the maximum-quality Crysis 2 test).

One area in which the Inspiron 15R 7520 failed to perform well is battery life. In our battery-life tests, it was able to last for only 3 hours, 43 minutes—exactly 2 hours less than the average battery life of the last three laptops we've tested in the all-purpose category. And that isn't even taking into account the category leader, or the Acer Aspire TimelineUltra M5, which managed to survive a stunning 7 hours, 24 minutes on one charge of the battery.

Oct 18 2012 - Dell's lowest cost Inspiron 15 laptop certainly is affordable at $400 and offers a good deal of performance from its Core i3 processor. It also sets itself apart from its competition with small things such as easy to upgrade memory and Bluetooth support. All of this is tempered by the fast that this is an older chassis so it lacks modern features like USB 3.0 or even the customization that Dell offers for its more expensive 15R series. Still, it will fill the needs of those for a low cost but decently performing laptop.

Oct 18 2012 - Dell's latest low cost laptop is actually based on the chassis from its previous 15-inch consumer laptop and thus has the Inspiron 15 designation. In terms of appearance, it lacks the two tone color of the new Inspiron 15R with battery like dell 2941E battery, dell 9943E battery, dell Inspiron 7100 battery, dell Inspiron 7500 battery, dell Inspiron 7000 battery, dell 2M400 battery, dell 5208U battery, dell XPS M1210 battery, dell UD265 battery, dell Inspiron 3700 battery, dell XPS L702X battery, dell JWPHF battery or the various switchable color lids for the back of the display. The laptop is also slightly thicker and longer than the newer laptop.

What is nice to see in the Inspiron 15 is the inclusion of the second generation Intel Core i3-2350M dual core processor. Most laptops in this price range elect to use the slower and less feature oriented Pentium's. This gives it a performance advantage over most of the laptops in the $400 price range. It still comes with 4GB of memory which allows for a smooth overall experience with Windows 7. The memory is configured with a single 4GB memory modules which has its benefits and its drawbacks. It makes it easy for consumers to upgrade to 8GB by installing a second 4GB module. The downside is that it only runs in single channel mode which does slightly impact performance against laptops that have two modules.

Storage features on the Dell Inspiron 15 are pretty much to be expected and just about the same as on the more expensive Inspiron 15R. It features a 500GB hard drive that provides it with a good amount of storage space for applications, data and media files. Many laptops under $400 are switching to this but a few still use the smaller 320GB drives. The big drawback is that the Inspiron 15 is based on an old chassis design and as a result does not have any USB 3.0 ports. This means that it doesn't have the ability for easy upgrading with high speed external storage devices like the more expensive 15R. A dual layer DVD burner is included for playback and recording of CD or DVD media.

Graphics for the Inspiron 15 are typical of a low cost laptop. The 15.6-inch display panel offers your standard 1366x768 resolution. It uses the low cost TN technology panels that means the viewing angles are fairly narrow and the color is a bit more muted but this is something all low cost laptops have to deal with. Since it uses the second generation Intel Core i3 processor, the graphics are driven by the Intel HD Graphics 3000. This doesn't have the same 3D performance of the newer HD 4000 in the 15R or the Radeon based graphics of the AMD processors. The result is the inability to even be used for 3D gaming at a casual level. What the graphics do provide though is acceleration for media encoding when used with Quick Sync compatible applications.

Just like the newer Dell Inspiron 15R, the Inspiron 15 uses a six cell battery pack with a 48WHr capacity rating. This is pretty typical of a 15-inch laptop. In digital video playback tests, the system was able to manage just under three and a quarter hours before going into standby mode. This isn't quite as long as the newer 15R but that is using the newer and more energy efficient Ivy Bridge processor rather than a Sandy Bridge model. This puts it pretty much in your average running time. It certainly isn't as long as the HP Envy Sleekbook 6 but that comes with a larger battery and uses a slower and more energy efficient processor.

In terms of competition, there are three models in the same price range. The ASUS X54C offers a slightly faster processor with more memory and a USB 3.0 port but has less storage space. The HP 2000t is a bit more affordable but uses a slower Pentium processor. Finaly, the Toshiba Satellite C855 is less expensive with a USB 3.0 port but also uses a Pentium processor and less storage space.

Dell unveils ultra lightweight Latitude

Perhaps working on the maxim that one can never be too rich or too thin, Dell Computer Corp. unveiled its lightest, slimmest Latitude laptop yet Monday, offering a rich array of options for users on the go.

The Latitude X200 weighs 2.8 pounds (1.26 kilograms) and is four-fifths of an inch thick (20.32 millimeters), with a 12.1 inch XGA (extended graphics array) TFT (thin film transistor) display, giving its screen a maximum resolution of 1,024 by 768 pixels.

The sleek new laptop comes with a 30G-byte ATA-100 hard drive, up to a 640M-byte PC133 SDRAM (Synchronous Dynamic RAM) and an Ultra Low Voltage Mobile Intel Pentium III-M 800 MHz processor combined with an Intel 830MG chipset.

The X200 is the second ultra-portable laptop in the Latitude line, meant to be a companion to the 3.6 pound C400, and the Round Rock, Texas, company's first ultra lightweight product. Although the C400 is heavier than the X200, it's aimed at the power user, boasting a 1.2 GHz processor, a Dell spokesman said.The C400 began shipping in November.

The X200 is geared even more toward mobile users, with a 56K bps (bit per second) V.92 modem with an integrated 3Com 10/100 Ethernet, and a six-cell 20-watt hour "smart" Lithium Ion dell XPS M1210 battery. The new laptop has two USB (universal serial bus) ports, one PC Card slot, and one six-pin IEEE 1394 port.

The Latitude X200 starts at US$1,899 with these standard features and will begin shipping in all of Dell's worldwide regions in mid to late May, the spokesman said. The company is also offering an array of customized options that can ratchet up the price a few hundred dollars more, however.

Users can choose to add a X200 Media Base with a choice of optical drives such as CD-ROM, CD-RW (CD-rewritable), or a combination of CD-RW/DVD starting at $299. When attached to the media base, the X200 still weighs less than 5.5 pounds, Dell said.

Customers who want to carry only what they need can also chose to customize their orders, with an external CD-ROM, included in the base configuration, or a combination CD-RW/DVD that connects directly to the computer through the IEEE 1394 port, for $349.

A longer-life battery is also available for users on the go. Dell is offering a 58-watt hour high-capacity battery, which adds six hours of additional battery life for $199, but also adds 0.6 more pounds to the laptop. Users can also opt for external battery charger, which works with both the standard 20-watt hour and 58-watt hour batteries, for $79.

Dell's foray into the slim and trim notebook market shows that the company is trying to compete with design leaders like Sony Corp., said Stephen Baker, director of research at NPD Techworld in Reston, Virginia.

"Everyone wants to make the type of product that appeals to high-level executives and people who will spend a lot of money on those slim, stylish notebooks," Baker said.
